Hello, my name is Terry Pinkney. I am a Bebo Mia Inc., certifying full spectrum doula and breastfeeding educator. I earned my B.A degree in Psychology from Spelman College.
I am the mother of 6 beautiful, intelligent and talented young adults and a new grandmother, “Lovey” to one animated and very curious 4 month old grandson.
I spent most of my early career, working as a Hospitality Professional. It was some of the happiest, most fulfilling and exciting times of my life. I found I really enjoyed listening to people and helping them remove barriers and obstacles that would interfere with their purpose for traveling. I met so many people coming and going for all different reasons and on different journeys. But my job was simple. Pay attention to our guests, listen to understand, be excellent in my work, treat people with dignity and respect, and show them how to participate in their own success on their journey. To thrive in hospitality you must have a servant's heart.
My first birth experience at 22 years of age was an amazing, powerful experience that set the tone for all of my subsequent births. My first birth was managed by a nurse midwife. She was kind, knowledgeable and supportive. Her guidance led me to have a natural, unmedicated birth with no episiotomy. She taught me how to participate in my own successful birthing experience. A Powerful and Fierce experience.
I wish I could say all my births were as wonderful as the first one, but they were not. All 6 of my births were very different. One day I will share them with you. For now, I will share that I experienced the terrifying fear of having an emergency cesarean section under general anesthesia due to a prolapsed cord at 28 weeks. I also had the confusing experience of being given Pitocin without consent and unexpectedly suffered intense debilitating contractions I was not initially prepared to handle. However, I remembered be powerful and be determined! I recovered and made it through the experience. I thank that first midwife for teaching me how to stay fierce, be calm and take control of my breath and mind. Finally, during my last birth, I had the frustrating experience of being dismissed by the doctor when I requested an epidural "too soon" for his liking. He delayed and the result was my sixth child was very quickly born before the epidural ever took effect. Thank goodness, that same midwife's training from 15 years prior, helped me gather my that fierce determination. I drew upon my strength and power to take control of my mind, breathe, focus and push while she came to me. What you learn from a Doula will remain with you forever and help you in multiple situations.
When my oldest child asked me to serve as her doula this year, I was stunned and delighted. Being a part of her and my son-in-love’s birth journey was magical. I realized that my 32 years raising amazing children and my knowledge as an experienced birther, mom and advocate for women as a group leader and friend, qualified me to share intimate knowledge and firsthand experience with you in this vulnerable and transparent, yet brave birthing space.
I will share evidence-based research that will help equip you with knowledge, teach you skills and call upon your power and determination to help you bring a fierce intimacy and individuality to your birth journey. Together we will develop a plan tailored to help you travel along your individual birth journey. You will develop and use your voice to advocate for the birth experience you envision. Although we cannot guarantee where birth will lead you, together we will take an active role in preparing your mind, body and emotions to complete the journey ahead.
